Process Reflection The process of composing this canon was very different from the first canon exercise as immediately it offers more possibilities in rhythm and melody simply by composing horizontally. It was very easy to come up with an opening motif because the immediate approach was more open and creative, however, more harmonic difficulties were created in the process of adding the second, third, and fourth entry. While I started this assignment composing very horizontally, as the harmonic problems occurred, I began to line up the chords and rhythm more vertically across all the voices. I also used the recordings to do some trial and error testing which was quite helpful. The other thing was composing in a different mode, I used Mixolydian mode and it was a little challenging to grip the feel of the mode and not suddenly jump back to Ionian mode at first. To deal with this I set up core chords and notes of the mode (eg. fa, the leading tone) throughout the canon. Overall, I felt that composing in this manner allowed for more creativity but it was also more difficult to keep track of what the harmonic structure was. Recording Reflection As I recorded some earlier versions of this canon, I realized sometimes although the harmonies worked, the music was too dense to sound very clean and ‘nice’. This problem is still present in the final product although a bit than previous versions as I edited the composition. I find it somewhat challenging to produce a canon that was both varied and interesting but still lyrical and harmonious. The messy feeling in the music was made a bit worse by my intonation which could be improved but I had always found it slightly difficult to harmonize with myself as I listen to the audio that plays from my headphones, which is a different space than my voice as I sing. Harmonizing became increasingly hard on the third and fourth entries as the music got denser. Again, similar to previous canon exercises, I found it slightly difficult to coordinate the musicality of the canon because unlike singing in a group, where dynamics and phrasing could be adjusted in real-time, here it is impossible to adjust prerecorded audio.
